I regularly take a coated baby aspirin (81 mg) to reduce heart attack risk. Recently I've heard that I should carry regular aspirin for a cardiac emergency. What's that all about?

Joe says:
Because many doctors recommend carrying regular aspirin tablets with you to be used in a cardiac emergency, I always have a few with me in a small plastic case. A study of over 17,000 patients found a 23% reduction in the death rate and a 49% reduction in new or recurrent heart attacks when aspirin was taken within 24 hours of experiencing heart attack symptoms. As a result, doctors now advise that people who think they're having a heart attack should chew and swallow one regular uncoated adult aspirin (325 mg). It's estimated that this recommendation, if widely adopted, would save 5,000 to 10,000 lives in the U.S. each year.
