One of the keys to sticking with an exercise program is to commit to it in writing. The very act of writing something down makes it real. After my bypass surgery, when I got started on an exercise program, it was a bit hit-and-miss. Some days I'd have the time and do it. Some days I wouldn't. But exercise was too inportant to my rehabilitation to treat so casually. I needed to make it a priority.

What I did was to take my calendar and write at the top of it, "I will exercise every morning." That was a written contract with myself. Then I marked out one hour a day in the morning as a meeting with "Mr. Nike." Everything else in my life worked around that appointment, those hours of blocked out time. Thanks to "Mr. Nike," I was able to develop the exercise habit. But it started with a written contract with myself.
