Question (Sep 15, 2008 at 9:05pm)

My husband had bypass surgery last month. We instantly got religious about low fat which wasn't a problem because I had already been watching fat; just not religously. Our cardiac rehab emphasizes low salt. We have been keeping to the recommended 2000mg as closely as we can. So my question is this. We are fairly young to be in the zipper club, (48/50) and I don't have any health issues. Since we started closely monitoring salt intake, my feet cramp at night. His legs have been cramping with the walking, but it's not getting any better. We are not atheletes but are active. Is it possible we are not getting enough salt?

Joe says:

It is difficult to give you a definitive answer without more details about your husband's condition & medications. However, in general, leg cramps are not associated with low-sodium diets. They could, however, be the result of a potassium imbalance or even dehydration. In addition, leg pain sometimes is a side effect of statin drugs. If I were you, I'd check with your husband's doctor to get a better fix on this problem. That is my best advice.
