Joe says:
Don't take folic acid or vitamin B12 supplements in hopes of reducing your risk of heart disease or stroke. Some early research suggested that these B vitamins might reduce the risk by lowering blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with cardiovascular disease. But subsequent research has been disappointing. One recent British study involved 6,000 heart attack survivors who took folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements for almost seven years. Though their homocysteine levels dropped, they were just as likely to have another heart attack as people taking a placebo.
