There is good news and bad news about statin drugs. First the good news. A recent study showed that stains may decrease the risk of cataracts. People aged 45 to 75 in the study who were taking statin drugs had a nearly 40% lower risk of cataracts compared to non-users.
The bad news is that statin drugs may slightly increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. A recent analysis of 13 clinical trials found that statin users had a 9% higher risk of developing diabetes over a four-year period, and the risk increased with age.
The bottom line? I think that the great cardiovascular benefits of statin drugs far outweigh the small increased risk. You should check with your doctor if you have questions or concerns.
