I understand that alcohol in moderation (such as a glass of wine with dinner) may benefit heart health. Here's my question. My husband doesn't drink during the week, but typically consumes a six-pack of beer on a Saturday night. What's that doing for his cardiovascular health?

Joe says:
Like so many things, alcohol is a two-edged sword. Taken in moderation, alcohol can be cardio-protective. Experts define "moderation" as up to two drinks per day for men and one for women.
But binge drinking, even if occasional, can increase the risk for heart disease and stroke. Binge drinking is typically considered six or more drinks in one sitting for men, four or more for women. It can cause increases in blood pressure and blood clotting, and can create disturbances in heart rhythm that are linked to stroke.
