Joe says:
Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable by taking 5 lifestyle measures:
1. Lose weight, if you need to. Losing as little as 5% of your body weight could cut your risk in half.
2. Get screened for diabetes. Everyone over age 45, and those younger than 45 who have risk factors (such as your family history), should be screened.
3. Don't smoke. Smoking can lower insulin production and raise blood sugar.
4. Be physically active for 30 minutes every day.
5. Eat healthy. Choose fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The complex carbohydrates in these foods take longer to digest and raise blood sugar levels more slowly. Avoid high-fat foods, refined carbohydrates and sugar.
