I hear a lot of advertising on the radio for supplements that will cure just about everything, including high cholesterol. Should I load up?

Joe says:
Be wary of dietary supplements, particularly those claiming to burn fat, build muscle or boost metabolism. Although a multibillion-dollar industry, these supplements are not regulated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. The FDA only steps in after receiving reports of illness. So, be skeptical. If a claim is too good to be true, don’t listen. A few supplements are vetted, such as fish oil pills for those with heart disease, vitamin D and calcium for many people, and folic acid for women of childbearing age. But despite claiming to ward off aging, lowering cholesterol, guaranteeing weight loss and curing Alzheimer’s, most dietary supplements are ineffective and some are harmful.
