Joe, I started the weight loss "Learn Program" through a hospital in my area. I have metabolic syndrome, am 49 y.o. white female, am considered "obese" and weigh 213 lbs. I also have Fibromyalgia that flares up when I increase my activity. FM has kept me sedentary. I find it so difficult to get back exercising because I know the pain I'll feel once I begin.rnrnDo you have any recommendations?

Good for you to have started the hospital weight-loss program. That will be the key to your success. Because of the complications caused by FM, I asked my good friend, Dr. Barry Franklin, a nationally-recognized expert in physical activity, for his recommendations. "Traditional exercises may not work for a person with FM," says Dr. Franklin. "We've had success with water/aerobic exercise in this population, as well as a combined arm -leg ergometer called the NuStep. One important thing to keep in mind is that the exercise program should use interval training (alternating work and rest) rather than continuous exercise. And the effort should be moderate. Perceived exertion should not be more than 'somewhat hard.'"
