Joe says:
New guidelines from the American Heart Association recommend that women eat no more than 100 calories of added sugars per day. That's about 25 grams or a little more than six teaspoons. Men should limit their intake to no more than 150 calories. That's just about 36 grams or a about nine teaspoons.
Remember, one teaspoon of sugar contains about 16 calories. On average, Americans consume the equivalent of about 22 teaspoons of added sugar every day. Most of it comes from sweetened beverages. One can of regular soda has about 8 teaspoons, or 130 calories.
In addition to increasing the risk for obesity, too much added sugar has been linked to high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart attack and stroke.
