I always get a lot of questions about red meat. Many people expect that I advise people to avoid it, but they are wrong. I believe that red meat can fit into a healthy diet.

Red meat is a good source of protein, iron and the B vitamins. However, some cuts are high in fat (particularly saurated fat) and calories. Cuts such as T-bone steak, prime rib, New York strip, rib eye, rib roast, brisket, pork spare ribs and lamb roast can have 20 to 30 grams of fat per 3.5-ounce serving.

So, I have two recommendations. First, look for the lower-fat cuts such as beef labeled "round" or "loin." When you are shopping for pork, lamb and veal, look for "loin" or "leg" cuts.

Next, control portion size. Servings of red meat should be about the size of a woman's palm or a deck of cards or an audio (not video!) cassette. If you follow these two suggestions and don't eat it too frequently, red mat does not have to penalize your diet.
