The parties and treats that started at Thanksgiving have caused me to gain a few pounds. I'm concerned that by the time Christmas is over, I'll be up even more. Help!

Joe says:
The average American puts on seven pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. However, with a little thought, you can avoid that happening.
1. Avoid starving yourself in order to splurge at parties. Eat breakfast and lunch, and a piece of fruit or a glass of milk before you leave home. If you go out too hungry, you're more likely to overeat.
2. Start with fruits and cut-up veggetables, then sample the richer foods when you are not so hungry.
3. Use a cocktail napkin or small plate and you'll take less food.
4. Take a half portion for your first serving.
5. Get involved in a good conversation instead of handing around the food.
6. Be moderate with alcohol. The average drink or glass of wine contains 150 to 200 calories. Have just two or three and you've had the equivalent of a meal!
