My husband and I are movie fans. We both are a little overweight. My husband has decided to forego the popcorn and candy to save calories, but he always gets a large drink. I say he is kidding himself. Who is right?

Joe says:
Movie popcorn, candy and, yes, soft drinks should be rated "R"...or at least "HC" for high calorie! Your husband is smart to stay away from popcorn and other snacks.
A recent article in "Nutrition Action," an excellent newsletter, looked at movie foods. It found that a large tub of popcorn at Cinemark theaters contains about 17 cups of popcorn (910 calories), at AMC it contains 16 cups (1,030 calories) and at Regal is has 20 cups (1,200 calories.) And that's without the "buttery" toppings (about another 250 calories!)
But unfortunately, soft drinks are not a healthy alternative. Here's what you get at Regal theaters:
A small (32 fl oz) soft drink has 300 calories and 19 teaspoons of sugar.
A medium (44 fl oz) has 400 calories and 26 teaspoons of sugar.
And a large (54 fl oz.) has 33 teaspoons of sugar...or about 10 tablespoons of sugar.
If your husband is serious about watching calories, he'd be better to eat a healthy meal before or after the movie.
