Hey Mr.Joe, I'm a student doing a project on the international overweight crisis and you are the role model which my group wants to use to inspire youths that anything is possible. Its amazing how you have overcame all the difficulties and spread your message of a healthy lifestyle worldwide. I was just wondering because information on the blog is limited, but how did you have that coronary bypass in the first place? Did you not exercise as much or had an unhealthy diet? Stay healthy and inspire the world! (I know you will)

Joe says:

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I have a genetic leaning toward high cholesterol, but it was an unhealthy lifestyle that turned it into coronary disease. In the 1970's I ate the typical American diet ("Red meat & whole milk for strong bones & healthy teeth"), thought I was physically active by playing social golf, was around second hand smoke, and was stressed chronically. All of these lifestyle habits contributed to the need for bypass surgery. Once the surgery was over, I needed to improve those habits, and I did. The result is 31 years (so far) of good health.

Good luck with your project. I think the health (and weight) of children is the greatest public health issue of this century.
