I'm a heart patient, but my question isn't about me. I'm concerned about my wife. She seems to be depressed regularly. Can this have an impact on her heart?

Joe says:
You are right to be concerned as new evidence suggests that depression can lead to heart disease. The Nurses Health Study of 63,000 women found that those who were depressed were more than twice as likely to experience sudden cardiac death. According to experts such as Dr. Redford Williams of Duke University, depression is an independent risk factor for heart disease - right along with the classic risks of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking. I'd recommend reading the section on stress in my book (written with Dr. Barry Franklin), TAKE A LOAD OFF YOUR HEART, and having her consult with her doctor.
