I am an RN and work in cardiac rehab. We use your video for teaching and we have found it to be very informative and helpful. One question I have is when you recommend a "budget" of fats for the day, does that mean mostly mono and polyunsaturated fats and a minimum of saturated and trans fats? Thank you for your help. I appreciate your website as well.

Thanks for your comments on my video. I'm glad it is helpful. My fat budgeting methodology is popular because patients can understand it. The budget reflects two rules regarding fats and oils. The first, obviously, is to use the budget as a guide for total fat intake (usually 30 - 50 grams per day for females, 35 - 55 grams per males.) The second rule is that when you choose to eat fats and oils, choose the healthiest ones. My recommendation is to choose monounsaturated oils (olive oil, in particular) as the best choice, followed by polyunsaturated oils. I counsel patients to avoid tropical oils and trans fat, and to minimize saturated fat intake. The secret to making the fat budget work is to move from processed foods to whole foods.
